New director and new name

Anne-Louise Sommer will take the post of director of the Danish Museum of Art & Design on September 1st 2011.
At the same time the museum changes its name to Designmuseum Danmark.

New director Anne-Louise Sommer
Anne-Louise Sommer (b. 1961) comes from a position as rector of The Danish Design School, where she has also been head of research and senior lecturer.

Anne-Louise Sommer has achieved impressive results at The Danish Design School leading the institution safely through a period of radical organisational challenges and changes.

”Anne-Louise Sommer has a strong profile within the fields of design research and management, and she is perfectly suited for realizing Designmuseum Danmark’s new strategy. She will be in charge of an innovative Designmuseum, which will play a central role in developing the future of the Danish de-sign community through our communication and research,” says chairman of the museum’s board, Flemming Lindeløv.

The change of director will happen as present director Bodil Busk Laursen takes her retirement.

The Danish Museum of Art & Design changes its name to Designmuseum Danmark
As part of the museum’s strategy of reaching a large audience, the museum changes its name in 2011. The new name reflects an innovative, open and inclusive institution. The museum is changing its name because the word ‘kunstindustri’ (applied art) is not used in contemporary Danish. Designmu-seum Danmark is a museum for its own time and its purpose is to inspire the development of the best design solutions and give new perspectives on the historical collections.

”It is necessary for the museum to have a name which is widely understood and communicates its identity and purpose. The new name is short, concise and international. With the change of name the museum also demonstrates its kinship with design museum’s in for example England, Germany and Finland,” says chairman of the museum’s board, Flemming Lindeløv.

danish design – i like it!
The name change will be launched with the exhibition “danish design – I like It”, which has been created by designer Jasper Morrison. He gives his personal view on Danish design based on Designmuseum Danmark’s vast collections. The exhibition will be shown 8 April – 4 September 2011.
