Tekstile illusioner tekstil

The designer trio TEXTILE ILLUSIONS consisting of Anne Louise Bang, Helle Trolle and Anne Mette Larsen show the exhibition TWEEN in the Design Studio at the Danish Museum of Art & Design.

The design trio TEXTILE ILLUSIONS, established in 2003, demonstrate at the exhibition that it is possible to combine past, present and future in the world of textiles. Today’s textile designers or – artists do not let themselves be limited, but have the ability and the curiosity to dare experiment and make use of the newest technology in their works. With a basis in a thorough and traditional weaving education, TEXTILE ILLUSIONS combine a classic woven pattern with digital technique and animation.

The motif that TEXTILE ILLUSIONS work with is a damask diaper pattern – a geometric design that creates either stripes or checks. In traditional weaving it is often woven in white, and the effect of the light is to make the design stand out in different shades. TEXTILE ILLUSIONS work up the design on the computer and split it into single elements, which are manipulated into new patterns in sequences where every repetition has new variations.

The works are woven on the TC-1 loom – a single thread control computer loom – at Designskolen Kolding. The materials are Japanese paper yarn and polyester monofile.

The exhibition consists of two parts. One work is composed of four lengths, where the pattern is broken, shifted and frozen in four different sequences, which are worked into new sequences set in motion by lighting. The other work is composed of 24 smaller elements, which reciprocally relate to the original pattern. The light has become an integral part of the surface of pattern, capturing rhythms and structures as delicate colours.

The exhibition is shown at the Design Studio at the Danish Museum of Art & Design 1 December 2006 – 11 February 2007.
