Images of the World: the Global Poster

Through a representative and thematically structured selection of posters, Images of the World: the Global Poster is an enlightening and visual story of the pictorial development and design of the poster as a medium. By the display of approximately 300 posters, the exhibition covers a period of about 200 years. The attention of the exhibition is focused upon the modern breakthrough of the poster in European and American city culture in the late 19th century and up until the current situation today. A situation, where the medium has gained global prevalence and despite all predictions of the opposite, is still a vital player in relation to numerous public contexts across the world.

Emphasizing the tracking of main tendencies and phases connected to the poster as a powerful visual form of communication, the exhibition is organized through a wide spectrum of themes and point of views represented in the field of the media itself. A field that comprises almost all aspects of the commercial, political and cultural posters. The aspiration has been to represent and include all genres, continents and all international main names, in relation to the poster, at the exhibition.

The research starting point has been the considerable collection of foreign posters at the Danish Museum of Art and Design. The Danish poster is only selectively represented at an international level by central works from the symbolist painter J. F. Willumsen up until present time. It is hereby placed and shown in a European and global context without any special priority.

In relation to the exhibition, the curator Lars Dybdahl and Nyt Nordisk Forlag Arnold Busck A/S publishes a comprehensively illustrated book bearing the same name as the exhibition.
