EVENT
Danish carnival in the museum garden
Sunday 15 February, 13.00-14.00.
A Danish carnival tradition for all ages.
On Sunday 15 February, Designmuseum Danmark will host a traditional Fastelavn celebration in its historic garden, an annual highlight that brings together costumes, community and the centuries-old ritual of barrel-beating.
Rooted in Danish folklore, Fastelavn is one of the country’s most beloved children’s traditions. But at the museum, it becomes a festive occasion for all ages. Visitors are invited to dress up and take part in the time-honoured game of ‘slå katten af tønden’ – beating a barrel to release sweets (and once, symbolically, to chase away evil spirits in the form of a black cat).
The event features age-grouped barrel-beating contests: two barrels for children under 10, one for older children up to 15 and a final barrel for adults. In addition to the crowning of the traditional barrel king or queen, prizes will be awarded for the funniest costume, most original idea, and an audience choice selected by popular vote.
Held in the museum’s listed garden, the event promises a colourful celebration in a unique setting. Entry is free, but registration is required due to limited capacity. Costumes are highly encouraged.
