CHRISTMAS AT DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK

Christmas is moving back into Designmuseum Danmark.

Behind the museum’s historic walls, the scent of spiced ‘gløgg’ drifts out from the café, the shop brims with design gifts and ornaments you won’t find anywhere else, and every Saturday the workshop rooms come alive as children and adults sit down together to craft their own Christmas decorations.

This year, the museum also opens a new chapter in its LABORATORIUM series: this time with the ceramic duo Claydies, made up of Karen Kjældgård-Larsen and Tine Broksø. Together they explore Christmas and its rituals through a lavish and playfully offbeat ceramic feast, where glaze glistens instead of gravy. As tradition dictates, you can also experience Designmuseum Danmark’s annual Christmas table. This year’s interpretation comes from Danish textile artist Stine Leth, whose tactile and colourful take on the table celebrates the spirit of togetherness and festive imagination.

THREAD, HEARTS AND CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

In the museum’s large Christmas workshop, children and families can learn a small craft together. This year, guests will be making charming, personal decorations for the tree, everything from delicate baubles to stars and little bells. Remember to book your ticket in advance.

THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TABLE

A tradition has taken root: for the fourth year in a row, Designmuseum Danmark presents its annual Christmas table.

Each year, a different artist or designer is invited to interpret this cherished ritual. In 2025, Danish knit artist Stine Leth transforms the Christmas table into a sensuous, colourful installation, a tactile feast for the eyes that captures the joy, warmth, and slight chaos of the festive season.

CHRISTMAS IN THE MUSEUM GARDEN

Tucked away in the heart of the museum lies a secret garden: a green sanctuary that turns into a small winter fairytale come December. Here, visitors can breathe deeply among frost-covered branches and take a quiet pause under the open sky. Children can play in the crisp air while adults wrap their hands around a hot coffee from the café and let the Christmas spirit settle in.

SEASONAL TREATS IN THE CAFÉ

At the museum café, FORMAT, the scent of Christmas fills the air. Warm yourself with a cup of spicy gløgg, enjoy seasonal dishes made from fresh local ingredients, or indulge in freshly baked bread and cookies straight from the oven. The café offers a cosy retreat from the holiday bustle and a place to unwind between exhibitions, where even the smallest visitors are warmly welcomed.

A CERAMIC CHRISTMAS?

This winter, the museum’s Laboratorium series turns its focus to ceramics and the rituals of Christmas. The artist duo Claydies — Karen Kjældgård-Larsen and Tine Broksø — are known for shaping clay with a wink and a sense of irony. Their latest project, Ceramic Food Processes, explores food as both form and cultural phenomenon. For Designmuseum Denmark, they have created a whimsical, fully ceramic Christmas feast — a joyful fusion of art, craft, and festive tradition.
