Kim Buck
LABORATORIUM invites audiences behind the scenes of the creative process of a designer or craftsperson. In the fifth exhibition in the series, visitors are invited into the artistic laboratory of Danish goldsmith Kim Buck, offering an insight into jewellery as a living and exploratory field of artistic practice.
A LIFE WITH JEWELLERY
Kim Buck has worked with jewellery since 1979, when he began his apprenticeship as a goldsmith. Craftsmanship remains the foundation of everything he does, even as he challenges conventions and explores what jewellery can be, what it can mean, and how people live with it. The forthcoming LABORATORIUM exhibition examines the driving forces that have shaped Kim Buck’s practice as a goldsmith over several decades. LABORATORIUM Kim Buck takes its starting point in key themes within his practice, exploring them through both existing works and new pieces created specifically for the exhibition.
CURIOSITY AS A DRIVING FORCE
Doubt and curiosity are fundamental conditions of Kim Buck’s practice – not as obstacles, but as creative forces. When Kim Buck works, the idea, title and concept for a particular piece of jewellery often emerge in close connection with the techniques he develops along the way. He spends considerable time experimenting with and refining methods for each project, meaning that his works often contain an element of technological or aesthetic innovation. This is evident, for example, in the Opblæst series, where title, technique and meaning merge. In other works, linguistic shifts, wordplay and idiomatic expressions serve as points of departure. At the same time, Kim Buck’s jewellery engages in dialogue with the world around him – a dimension that will also be explored in the exhibition.
THE FIFTH LABORATORIUM EXHIBITION
The LABORATORIUM series comprises a succession of temporary exhibitions focusing on innovative and exemplary design from our time. At the same time, the exhibitions offer a rare insight into the design process – from the first idea to the finished work. The series presents both established and acclaimed designers and emerging designers and craftspeople whose visions and experiments are helping to shape the design of the future.
LABORATORIUM Kim Buck will be the most extensive presentation of Kim Buck’s work to date, bringing together a rich selection of works from different periods in dialogue with new explorations. Running from 13 November 2026 to 9 May 2027, the exhibition is the fifth in the LABORATORIUM series.
