THE MUSEUM

RECORD-BREAKING VISITOR NUMBERS

In 2024, an exceptionally high number of visitors passed through the turnstiles at the Designmuseum Danmark in Bredgade, Copenhagen. The museum, which has seen increasing visitor numbers since its major reopening in 2022, will close 2024 with the highest attendance ever recorded.

The past year at the museum has been particularly special. A record number of design enthusiasts purchased tickets to the museum, which showcases Denmark’s design heritage and presents both historical, contemporary, and future design. In 2024, the museum welcomed 348,093 paying visitors, far surpassing the previous record of 310,192 set in 2019.

Nearly half a million visitors In total, 488,079 people visited the museum in 2024 – a number that includes visits to both the museum’s exhibitions and free areas such as the museum garden, café, and shop. On the new attendance record, the museum’s director, Anne-Louise Sommer, commented:

“2024 has been an exceptionally good year for the Designmuseum. We can hardly contain our excitement over the impressive influx of visitors throughout the year and the strong interest in experiencing the very best of design and our proud Danish design heritage.”

According to the director, several factors contributed to the high visitor numbers. In the early months of the year, the exhibition IRMA – A DESIGN STORY attracted many Danish visitors, while a new permanent exhibition about Denmark’s most iconic designers – DANISH MODERN – drew many international guests during the summer. In the penultimate month of the year, a new ceramics exhibition opened, quickly becoming a favourite among visitors. Anne-Louise Sommer also points to the museum’s strong focus on the overall visitor experience as part of the explanation for the increased attendance in 2024 – a year in which new event formats such as free Friday bars and design talks expanded the range of experiences on offer.
