There is plenty to see and do at Designmuseum Danmark in December. You can view this year’s Christmas table by Skov Studio, make wooden Christmas decorations with the family, explore two newly opened exhibitions and take a break in the café with the flavours of the season.

What is there to do in the month of December? The question comes up every year, when the traditions are competing for attention. At the museum, it is easy to fit several major experiences into a single visit.

Let’s begin at the Christmas table. For the fifth year in a row, the museum has asked a designer or artist to offer their take on the traditions of Christmas, and this year the task has fallen to Skov Studio. If you’re in the mood for colour and going all out, there is good reason to continue on to Henrik Vibskov: The Exhibition. And that is only the beginning, as the museum also offers the newly opened LABORATORIUM Kim Buck and the popular permanent exhibitions.

If you have children with you, the family workshop is an obvious place to land. Here you can make wooden Christmas decorations, and it is hard to imagine a better way to get into the Christmas spirit than getting your hands on the material.

And when your eyes have had their fill, the café awaits with coffee and a menu that tastes of winter and Christmas. The museum shop is right next door, with design gifts for the whole festive season, so you can leave the museum with both impressions and a gift or two under your arm.

MAKE YOUR OWN WOODEN CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

What kind of Christmas decorations belong on your tree: the ones that have been with the family for years, or something more modern? In the museum’s family workshop, children and adults can make their own wooden decorations and add a new piece to the collection at home.

THE DESIGN MUSEUM’S CHRISTMAS TABLE: SKOV STUDIO

For the fifth year in a row, Designmuseum Danmark invites you in to this year’s Christmas table, where a designer or artist interprets the traditions of Christmas in their own way. This year, the Christmas table is created by Skov Studio, run by the twin sisters Julie and Simone Lundgaard. With the forest as their starting point, they focus on the natural shapes, colours and textures of wood.

COLOUR YOUR CHRISTMAS

While Christmas slows the pace in most places, things are in full swing in Henrik Vibskov’s universe. The designer’s very particular way of working is at the heart of the large, sensory special exhibition, which includes everything from small models of installations and 44 display cases of objects, prototypes and works from his studio to large installations that you can move through. The result is a glimpse straight into a designer’s mind, where patterns, colours and quirky details fill every corner. It is a colourful counterpart to the muted calm of winter.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

Like Christmas, design is something we share. Every Sunday, Designmuseum Danmark offers free tours where we explore Danish and international design and crafts. Along the way, we tell the stories behind some of the museum’s most distinctive objects and give an introduction to the exhibitions. In December, we pay extra attention to the things that bring us together at this time of year, from the decorated Christmas table and the fine dinner services to Christmas decorations handed down from generation to generation.

END ON A TASTE OF CHRISTMAS

When the day’s programme has come to an end, there is still more to discover. In the café, you can warm up with a cup of coffee and a seasonal menu that tastes of winter and Christmas. Stay inside in the warmth, or take your cup outside to the museum’s beautiful garden. Blankets are ready to be wrapped around your shoulders, so you can enjoy the garden and the calm of winter before moving on.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS IN THE SHOP

In the museum shop, we have hand-picked the best design products and everyday objects of the highest quality. Here you can find all your Christmas gifts, and if there happens to be one thing left over, no one is saying you can’t treat yourself to a gift too.
